When university classes were pushed online due to COVID-19, the quality of my education plummeted while tuition continued to rise. It was clear that if I was to continue to develop my skills, I would need to find hands-on experience fabricating new technologies outside of the classroom. I moved across the country to work full-time at ThirdEye Gen as a hardware engineering intern while taking online classes. I quickly gained repute for spearheading projects from brainstorming through manufacturing and was promoted to head of prototyping after 2 months. Here's a quick look at a few of the projects I worked on.
When I started at ThirdEye, expensive prescription inserts were manufactured by a third party with significant lead times on each order.
I took the initiative to fix the supply chain and lead the manufacturing team to design and produce the prescription inserts in-house.
I reduced lead times from 3 weeks to 2 days by utilizing 3D printed frames and sourcing lenses from a local optician. The new supply chain also reduced the customer's price for inserts by 60% and saved the company $30,000 in tooling fees.
